INTRODUCTION TO PERSONAL FINANCES
THE THREE S SYSTEM

Final Project: Projects

OVERVIEW

Subject Area: Math / Extracurricular

Target Age: Primary Education (Grade 5th & 6th)

As students begin to enter their early teenage years, it is necessary they form the correct and proactive habits so that they may achieve greater success as they matriculate through the next phase of their schooling. An area of life they should get exposure to sooner rather than later, and one in which positive habit formation is necessary, is that of personal finances. An easy and simple format for them to familiarize themselves with this subject, is a system I created called "The Three S System".

PROJECT DESIGN

This lesson plan will help students take the fundamental mathematical principles they are learning and apply them to their future personal finances. From percentages and fractions to multiplication and division, these principles will be utilized in an effective manner. tp solve equations in regards to personal finances.

From working on the weekends as a babysitter to receiving a nice cash birthday gift from grandpa and grandma, its imperative students start to become familiar with concepts relating to how to manage their money. The ideas in this lesson will allow students to just this, utilizing practical math-based methods.

IMPLEMENTATION & EXECUTION

Lesson Objectives

  1. Students will be introduced to the Three S System (adopted from the well-known 50/30/20 rule)

  2. Students will be able to calculate simple equations regarding this financial method / system

  3. Students will be able to recall and define basic vocabulary related to general personal finance

Digital Resources Used

  1. YouTube

  2. Kahoot

  3. Quizlet

Lesson Length: 20-30min

Teacher’s Role: Lead activities, explain why and how lesson is applicable to students' future, and keep class focused

Language Assistant's Role: Facilitate discussion, define unknown vernacular, and activate student's curiosity

Student Activities

  1. Watch virtual video lesson

  2. Compete in competition style game

  3. Take digital quiz / study vocabulary

Evaluation of Activities

  1. Did students ask relevant questions regarding unfamiliar or interesting topics seen in the video?

  2. Were students able to calculate the solutions correctly using fundamental mathematic principals?

  3. Were students able to correctly identify and define vocabulary they were exposed to in the video lesson and competition activity?

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

How are you and the teacher working to complement each other?

The teacher and I will work as a unit to make sure the students are grasping the concept not only in English, but in their native tongue as well. As the teacher outlines how this can be practically used in their day-to-day lives, I will make sure students understand vocabulary that is new or unfamiliar, along with sharing examples from my own personal life of when I was their age.

How will students know they have achieved these learning objectives?

Students will know they have reached the desired learning outcome if and when they are able to succinctly explain the The Three S System to a friend or classmate, solve simple financial problems utilizing multiplication and division formulas, and can define or recall vocabulary that was presented and used in the The Three S System.

How will you be responding to diverse learning styles and levels of achievement among your students?

The lesson plan was created to adapt and fulfill the needs of each and every student, along with their own unique learning style. For more visual  learners, the video is a great way for them to grasp and see the system in action. For learners who thrive in a application setting, the virtual game allows them to see why and how they can practically apply this formula. And lastly, for those students who prefer to learn the vernacular of an idea, the quiz opens the door for them to fundamentally understand the terms utilized in this lesson.
